The car was handling well during practice but Daryl experienced a setback during the time trials with his clutch breaking during the first lap. He completed his two laps and brought the car to the pits for lengthy repairs. The car was race ready for the 200-lap feature, with Daryl starting at the back of the pack because he had been unable to participate in the heats. The 66 steadily gained position. At lap 40, Daryl radioed that he thought he had a tire going flat and he would pit at the next caution. The yellow came out at lap 47 and the team quickly checked the car over. The tires were fine; the handling problems were caused by a slipped power steering belt. With insufficient time to fix it under the yellow, Daryl returned to the track. Despite losing his power steering, he continued to climb, breaking into the top 10 at lap 88, and in 7th place by lap 98.
A competition yellow at the halfway mark gave the team the opportunity they needed. All cars pitted at lap 100 and the teams had 12 minutes to refuel and make any adjustments. Cars back on the track under the time limit would restart in their lap 100 position while cars that took longer started at the rear of the field. Repairs were made, the 66 was refueled, and Daryl restarted the race in 6th spot.
Daryl pitted with about 50 laps to go to change the rear tires in an effort to improve grip. The car remained competitive, and the 66 finished the race in 7th place.
Daryl is in 14th place in overall points in a field of 44 cars, and he is 3rd in the “hard charger” points.
