Season wrap-up (this is a long one!)

The last few weeks have been eventful ones for the 66 team…

August 21st was the make-up date at Scotia Speedworld for a rained out event earlier in the season. Daryl brought the second car for this one- it had been great in practice earlier in the week. Saturday was a bit of a different story- it wasn’t handling quite as well as he wanted. However, he earned a 10th place finish in the main race, despite running out of brake before lap 60.

The primary car made the trip to Fredericton for the 250-lap race at Speedway 660 over the Labour Day weekend. Hurricane Earl cancelled Saturday practice, and during the first practice Sunday morning, the motor in the 66 let go. Luckily, there was a brand-new motor, still in the crate, offered to Daryl by the 52 team. Our crew (and friends- special thanks to the 44 team) were kept busy changing the motor, finishing just in time for Daryl to get to the drivers meeting. The first chance Daryl had to try the car was during the 20-lap qualifying heat. This event is completely different than the usual format- drivers draw starting spots for heats and need to race their way in to the 250-lap feature via a heat, consolation, or last-chance race. Always a popular event, about 10 racers didn’t make the show. Daryl finished his heat 4th to earn a spot in the main event. Daryl brought the car in during many of the early cautions, working on the handling (as he did not have practice time to fine-tune). Unfortunately, with about 50 laps to go, the 66 got caught up in an incident, leaving the back end of the car badly damaged. It was not fixable during the race but Daryl was determined to finish the event. The car was handling horribly- you could actually see it hopping through the corners- but Daryl finished the race in the 15th position.

The 200-lap season finale was at Scotia Speedworld last weekend. Rained out Saturday, it got underway Sunday afternoon. The team was trying a new set-up on the car, and pitted a few times to improve handling. Daryl was in 10th with 20 laps to go when the car got loose, spun, and hit by several competitors. The rear end was destroyed, ending the race for our team. Daryl finished the season in 11th position.

Thank you for your support during 2010! Racing season is over but there is lots of work to be done in the garage for next year.

August 6 & 7- Atlantic CAT 250- Scotia Speedworld

While the rain washed out Daryl’s planned Wednesday night practice, happily the sun shone down for the weekend events. The team had the car working well by Friday’s last practice, and the 66 had a strong qualifying, earning a top ten spot in Saturday’s feature. Saturday night’s 250-lapper was a more than 3-hour race, slowed by 21 cautions. Daryl did a great job avoiding the vast majority of the incidents, but unfortunately got caught up in three, one causing considerable right-side damage. Restarting at the back of the line-up each time, the team took the opportunity to keep tuning the car for better handling in response to the quickly dropping temperatures. Daryl climbed back through the pack for a great 9th place finish.

Join us for our next race, this Saturday night (August 14th) at Riverside International Speedway, Antigonish. Hope to see you there!

July 31, 2010- Raceway Park, PEI

Daryl had a good race in Oyster Bed Bridge last weekend, after a delay while the track crew repaired turn 4 fencing and poles from a dramatic practice incident (the 24 car hit the wall in turn 3, climbing to rest across the turn 4 wall, nose through the fence into the grandstand area).

Once activities resumed, the 45 minutes of planned practice was skinnied down to 5 minutes. Daryl had the fastest lap in this practice and handily won his heat race. He started 12th in the 100-lap feature. It was the quickest race so far this season, and the laps ticked off quickly. Daryl wasfighting with a car that was pushing progressively harder. But he gained position and avoided getting caught up in the wrecks- although we were holding our breath as twice another competitor pushed it three-wide, the second time while exiting turn 4 in the final lap. Daryl finished 11th.

It’s a short week in the garage as the team works hard preparing for this weekend’s Atlantic CAT 250 race at Scotia Speedworld. The 66 team is practicing Wednesday night and preparing for a Breakfast Television Media event on Friday morning; open practice and qualifying take place Friday evening and the 250-lap Triple Crown race is set for Saturday.

Hope we see you there!
